About Polis and Latchi
A small town 37km north of Paphos, Polis offers a peace and tranquility unlike anywhere else on the island, despite the increase in tourism over the last few years. The north-western tip of Cyprus was once the ancient kingdom of Marion, and the whole area is now full of Hellenistic tombs in which Attic pottery was found, with some specimens dating back to the 4th and 6th Century B.C. Polis (or to give it its full name, Polis Tis Chrysochous) means "City Of The Golden Land" and is so called because of the fertile land surrounding the area. Nearby is the Akamas peninsula, with beautiful scenery and majestic beaches. Legend has it that Aphrodite, Goddess of Love and Beauty, used to bathe here in the pool of a natural grotto shaded by a fig tree.
The nature trails that start from here pass through amazing landscapes of pure nature. In the same area is Latchi, a small fishing port and formerly a sponge-diving center. The area is perfect for scuba-diving, and there are many diving schools running organized dives for people of all abilities. Before you move on to the rocky Akamas, be sure to ask at a local taverna for the catch of the day - seafood never tasted so good!
