About Limassol

Also known as Lemessos, Limassol is the main harbor of Cyprus and has the island's largest seaside resort. Some of the island's best-known festivals are staged here.

Built between the two ancient towns of Amathounta and Kourion and surrounded by the wine villages of Troodos, Limassol has been known to traders for its wine and sugar cane since the Middle Ages. Today, with a population of 135,000, it is the second-largest city of

Cyprus and is an important center for commerce and tourism. Its people are well known for their lively character and the holiday atmosphere in the town is absolutely carefree, explaining why many festivals and carnivals are an annual event during the summer months. Limassol shopping caters for all tastes, with products ranging from ultra-modern to traditional and hand-made. St. Andrews Street, close to the promenade, offers the best souvenirs in town.

Another sight worth seeing is Limassol Castle, located near the old port, where Richard The Lionheart allegedly married Queen Berengaria of Navarre in 1911 and crowned her Queen Of England. And if history interests you, why not visit the Folk Art Museum or the Archaeological Museum, both offering interesting pottery and tombstone displays amongst their numerous exhibits. Alternatively, if the outdoors are more to your liking, you could just as easily take the kids to the Municipal Gardens to see the animals at the zoo and have fun in the play area!
